These beautiful pens have been handcrafted from surviving Second World War Supermarine Spitfire propeller blades, to celebrate the return of the manufacture of the Spitfire propeller blades to Great Britain.
This exquisite rollerball pen is a joy to write with, being of a substantial weight, with the lid securing magnetically. The barrel of the pen is machined from the blade of an original Spitfire propeller and delicately polished with a hard wax. The pen is then finished with the serial number of the actual propeller blade from which it was made, engraved onto the pen’s barrel.
The story behind the Spitfire propeller is nestled in the box with the pen. Included is a beautifully produced leaflet with pictures and a biography of the how and where the blades were manufactured.
The beech wood presentation box is of our own unique design. Having the Spitfire pen as the precious cargo. It’s perfect, smart and practical with robust Hercules branding on the swing lid, wiped with linseed oil, and finally, protected in a sleeve.
This is a limited edition piece, made from a historic aircraft propeller makes a wonderful gift for any person who has an interest in aviation.
From the past…..to the future
During the Second World War, Spitfire propellers were designed by Rotol Propellers in Gloucester, and manufactured by both Rotol and Hordern-Richmond. Until now, the only approved propeller blades for Spitfires have been made elsewhere in Europe.
Hordern-Richmond Aircraft Ltd was founded in 1937 by Frederick Gordon-Lennox – the 9th Duke of Richmond and Edmund Hordern. Together, they developed Hydulignum; the high-strength compressed birch wood from which they made their propeller blades.
Hercules Propellers have brought the manufacture of Spitfire propeller blades back home to Great Britain and Gloucestershire for the first time in almost 60 years. Hercules Propellers’ new Spitfire blades are constructed as closely as possible to the originals, based on extensive testing, original drawings and specification documents supplied by Dowty propellers.
The Spitfire pen is available to purchase now for £150 each plus £5 packaging and delivery within the UK.
